Fountain of Youth 2.0

At a funeral, a youthful 84-year-old woman charmed me with some helpful hints about my iPhone. I couldn’t help myself from asking her how she stayed so young at heart. And that complexion!

Smoothies, she said.

I bought a NutribulletRx the next day. Consuming six different vegetables and fruits each day is a challenge for me or I should say was a challenge! Today in one gulp, I had nine. Fennel, red pepper, spinach, black beans, carrots, red grapes, apple, orange, banana. And that doesn’t count the snap peas I had at breakfast or the broccoli at dinner.

Glorified blender hogwash, I used to think of Nutribullets and their ilk. Not anymore. They are pulverizing machines, steamrollers in the world of kitchen appliances. The instruction manual calls what they do extracting. In one minute, they convert dense organic matter into liquid nutrition. I call it an age defying miracle.

You’re welcome.

An elderly fellow restaurant patron compelled my attention and I couldn’t figure why. She had wire-rimmed glasses, elastic waist linen slacks and a careless grandma perm, a little smushed where her head rested on her recliner earlier in the day. She looked so vital, so youthful.

And then I noticed her bust, perky as a 27 year old’s. Her age-defying secret -- her bra! Foundations matter!

So what are you waiting for? Get a new bra. Fitted by a professional. Here’s one I like.

Not Just For Sitting

The house I moved from had 11 rooms not counting the attic, the basement, the screen porch, pantries and hallways. If I remember correctly, at one time we had five sofas. It didn’t seem excessive at the time but looking back now, managing it was a full-time job even though I had several other full-time jobs.

My new home has three rooms counting the bathroom. Now, I think of each chair as its own room. The recliner is my TV room where I try not to sleep. The yellow chair is my reading room where naps are sweetest. The other yellow chair is where I write. The red chair is where I eat. And now I have only one sofa on which I sometimes watch TV, read, write or eat. Maybe I’ll call it my rumpus room.

Milwaukee’s Fire Department just can’t stop dreaming up new ways to help people. Besides the usual heroics of dousing fires, manning Jaws of Life and saving lives now they’re in the business of averting health crises, of actually reducing 9-1-1 calls.

It’s called the Community Paramedics (CP) program. Specially-trained paramedics visit Milwaukee residents who suffer from chronic health issues and then these firefighters find ways to enhance citizens’ health and limit their need for 9-1-1 services. It could be as simple as purchasing a small refrigerator so that an insulin-dependent woman does not need to walk to her friend’s house when she needs her medicine. In 2017, 9-1-1 usage decreased 62% for enrollees in the CP program.

That’s what I call above and beyond -- and inspiring.
